Are We Really Special?
We may have been told at one point in our lives that we were special. There was no one like us in the world, some would say. We would take all that with a grain of salt because there were so many outstanding people in the world, such as famous actors, superstar athletes, powerful public figures, and industry tycoons. Everything that we would read in magazines, view in the news, and scroll through on social media would tell us otherwise. The overwhelming message that we would tell ourselves was that we were definitely not special or unique. However, I would like to present a counter-argument to that message.
While there are many who stand out in our minds as being special or unique, they make us feel otherwise because we lose sight of what it took to get here in the first place. The chances that your parents would meet and create you with your current genetic makeup are astronomical. The actual odds of you being you are so improbable that it is like winning the biggest lottery in existence. By definition, simply being born makes you ultimately unique and special. You won the lottery of life.
The Miracle of Your Existence
Let’s put things into perspective. Scientists have estimated that the probability of you being born as you—with your exact DNA, experiences, and personality—is about 1 in many trillions. That’s an unfathomable number. It means that the universe aligned in an extraordinary way just for you to be here.
To truly grasp how incredible your existence is, think about these remarkable coincidences:
- Your parents had to meet at the exact right time and place.
- Their parents (your grandparents) had to meet under their own unique circumstances.
- Go back far enough, and you’ll realize that millions of small events—chance encounters, decisions, even wars, migrations, and relationships—had to unfold exactly as they did for you to be born.
If even one detail had changed—if your great-great-grandparents had lived in a different town, or if your parents had missed meeting each other by just a few seconds—you wouldn’t be here. That’s how rare and precious your existence truly is.
Redefining What It Means to Be Special
It’s easy to feel small in a world of billions of people. But, in reality, you are the only version of you that has ever existed or will ever exist. Your thoughts, dreams, and emotions are uniquely yours. Even identical twins—who share nearly the same DNA—have different life experiences that shape them into distinct individuals.
You don’t need to be famous or rich to be important. Your value isn’t determined by how many followers you have, what job you hold, or whether the world recognizes your name. You are significant simply because you are alive. Winning the lottery of life isn’t about luck—it’s about perspective. You don’t need external validation to prove your worth. The mere fact that you exist means you’ve already won the greatest prize of all. So, instead of questioning your significance, what will you do with this incredible gift of life?
